Etymology

edit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sēdḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *sed-.

Verb

edit

sēdēt (intransitive, 3rd conjugation, irregular, present sēžu, sēdi, sēž, past sēdēju)

  1. to sit, to be seated

Usage notes

edit

The present active participle form sēžošs is considered non-euphonic because of the ž-š fricative sequence; the form sēdošs is therefore preferred. The adverbial participle form sēžot does not have this problem and is actually more frequent than its alternative form sēdot.
