  1. (intransitive) to answer, to respond, to reply
    • Isaiah 40 (Icelandic, English)
Sannlega, mennirnir eru gras. Grasið visnar, blómin fölna, en orð Guðs vors stendur stöðugt eilíflega."
A voice says, "Cry out." And I answer, "What shall I cry?" "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."

Usage notes edit

  • The past participle form is very rare.
  • The difference to the word besvara lies in that svara concerns answers or responses to people, while besvara (or in some cases svara + certain particles) concerns answers or responses to questions, telephone calls and so on:
Att besvara en fråga. (= Att svara på en fråga.)
    To answer a question.
Svara inte i telefonen när det åskar!
Don't answer the phone during a thunderstorm!
    Svara honom inte!
