From Proto-Finnic *vaimo, from Proto-Uralic *wajŋe. Cognates include Finnish vaimo (“wife”), Northern Sami váibmu (“heart”), Erzya ойме (ojme, “soul; breath”) and Moksha вайме (vajme, “soul; breath”).
