From early *жоупа (*župa), inherited from Proto-Slavic *ďupa, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *djaupāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewp-eh₂ (hole), from *dʰewp-, from *dʰewbʰ- (deep).[1][2] First attested in c. 1320‒1340. Cognate with Middle Russian жопа (žopa), жупа (župa), Russian жо́па (žópa), dialectal Czech ďupa.
