From Proto-Indo-European *tn̥ǵʰu- (to become firm, curdle, thicken). Cognates include Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc-, to draw together, contract), Persian تنجیدن(tanjīdan, to squeeze), تنگ(tang, narrow), Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬑𐬨𐬀(taxma, brave, mighty), Lithuanian tankus (close, tight), German dicht and English tight.
