EtymologyEdit

From Middle Persian hmbʾl (hambār, store), from Old Persian *𐏃𐎶𐎲𐎠𐎼 (hambāra-), from Proto-Iranian *ham-bāra-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sam-bʰāra-, from Proto-Indo-European *sem- (together) + *bʰer- (carry). Cognate with Manichaean Middle Persian hmbʾr (hambār), Manichaean Parthian ʾmbʾrg (ambārag) (< *ʾmbʾr (ambār)), Avestan 𐬵𐬅𐬨𐬠𐬀𐬭 (hą̇̇mbar), and Sanskrit सम्भार (sambhārá, provision, necessaries, materials). Akin to Old Armenian համբար (hambar), ամբար (ambar), Classical Syriac ܐܡܒܪܐ (ʾambārāʾ), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אמברא (ʾambārāʾ), Hebrew אַמְבָּר (ʾambār); Iranian borrowings.
