EtymologyEdit

From Middle Persian hmbʾl(hambār, store), from Old Persian *𐏃𐎶𐎲𐎠𐎼(hambāra-), from Proto-Iranian *ham-bāra-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sam-bʰāra-, from Proto-Indo-European *sem-(together) + *bʰer-(carry). Cognate with Manichaean Middle Persian hmbʾr(hambār), Manichaean Parthian ʾmbʾrg(ambārag) (< *ʾmbʾr(ambār)), Avestan 𐬵𐬅𐬨𐬠𐬀𐬭(hą̇̇mbar), and Sanskrit सम्भार(sambhārá, provision, necessaries, materials). Akin to Old Armenian համբար(hambar), ամբար(ambar), Classical Syriac ܐܡܒܪܐ(ʾambārāʾ), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אמברא(ʾambārāʾ), Hebrew אַמְבָּר(ʾambār); Iranian borrowings.
