Etymology
editFrom Arabic جَوَّال (jawwāl); from the root ج و ل (j-w-l), جوّل “to wander”.
Pronunciation
editNoun
editPersian
editAlternative forms
edit- گوال (guvâl)
Etymology
editFrom Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ywbʾl), [Book Pahlavi needed] (jwbʾl), [Book Pahlavi needed] (jwʾl).[1][2][3] The last two have been alternatively read as [Book Pahlavi needed] (gwbʾl), [Book Pahlavi needed] (gwʾl). Its further origin is disputed. Perhaps from Old Iranian *yawa-barθra-, a compound of *yáwah (“barley; cereal, grain”) with a derivative of *bárati (“to bear”).[2] Alternatively, related to a verbal form in Persian گوالیدن (guvâlidan, “to grow, to increase”).[4] See Arabic شَلَّاق (šallāq) and جُلّ (jull) for related forms.
