Etymology

edit

Inherited from Middle Persian *hwlʾk' (/xwarāg/). By surface analysis, خور (xor, present stem of خوردن (xordan, to eat, to drink, to corrode, to collide with, to fit)) +‎ ـاک (-âk, suffix that forms the active participle from the present verb stem).[1] The suffix is an alternative form of ـا (), which originates from Middle Persian -ʾk' (/-āg/).[2] Akin to Old Armenian խորակ (xorak), an Iranian borrowing. Refer to کاواک (kâvâk) for another example of a word that ends this alternative form of ـا (), and to گویا (gôyâ, capable of speech) or رسا (resâ, audible) for examples of words that ends in the standard form of the suffix.
