Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sïrt (“back, rear of the body”); cognate with Bashkir һірт, Crimean Tatar sırt, Kumyk сырт (sırt), Kyrgyz сырт (sırt), Southern Altai сырт (sïrt), Tatar sırt and Uzbek sirt.

1. back, the rear of the body, especially its upper part

   Synonyms: آرد (ard), آرقه (arka), پشت (püşt), ظهر (zahr)

2. the ridge of a beast's back, especially the part covered by the saddle
3. the main ridge of a mountain or mountain chain
4. (by extension) the back part of an object, such as a knife or sword
5. the fur from the middle strip along the back of a beast's skin
