Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀚𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟𑀤𑀺 (*jakkaḍadi), from Prakrit *𑀚𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*jakka, restrained) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-), from an alteration of Prakrit 𑀚𑀬 (jaya, restrained) with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit यत (yata, restrained), from Proto-Indo-European *ym̥tós (held). Cognate with Marathi जखडणे (jakhaḍṇe), Gujarati જકડવું (jakaḍvũ), and Punjabi ਜਕੜਨਾ (jakṛanā).
