Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀚𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀤𑀺 (*jammadi), from Sanskrit यम्यते (yamyáte), from the root यम् (yam). Cognate with Gujarati જામવું (jāmvũ), Marathi जमणे (jamṇe), Bengali জমা (joma), Assamese জমা (zoma).
