From Proto-Tai *hoːmᴬ (fragrant). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩬᨾ, Khün ᩉᩬᨾ, Lao ຫອມ, ᦠᦸᧄ (ḣoam), Tai Dam ꪬꪮꪣ, Tai Dón ꪬꪮꪣ, Shan ႁွမ် (hǎum), Phake ꩭွံ (hoṃ), Ahom 𑜑𑜨𑜪 (hoṃ) or 𑜍𑜨𑜪 (roṃ), Zhuang hom.
