From Proto-Tai *selꟲ (classifier for long, thin objects). Compare Middle Chinese (MC sjenH, “thread”).[1] Cognate with Lao ເສັ້ນ (sen), Shan သဵၼ်ႈ (sāen), Saek แซ̂น.
