From Old Khmer វាង៑ (vāṅ), វាង្ង៑ (vāṅṅ), វង៑ (vaṅ, enclosure; citadel, fort, fortress, stronghold; palace; to encircle, to enclose, to surround; to bar, to block; to screen, to shield; etc), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (enclosure). Doublet of វាំង (vĕəng), ពាំង (pĕəng), and វៀង (viəng).

វង់ is also the allomorph of modern ពង់ (pŭəng, to puff up).
