Usage notes edit

  • Different analyses of Japanese grammar have different notions of what constitutes an inflected form. Many morphemes viewed in western grammar to be inflectional suffixes are viewed as 助動詞 (jodōshi) in traditional Japanese grammar (also known as 学校文法 (gakkō bunpō, school grammar)). For example, while western grammar considers 行かない (ikanai) to be an inflection of 行く (iku), traditional Japanese grammar consider the 行か (ika) part to be a 活用形 (katsuyōkei) of 行く (iku) and the ない (nai) part to be an auxiliary verb.
  • Not to be confused with 活用 (katsuyōgata) or 活用 (katsuyō no kata), which means “inflectional types”.
    • 2008, UniDic version 1.3.9 ユーザーズマニュアル[1]:
      (かつ)(よう)のある(ひん)()では、ctypes.cha()(のう)(かつ)(よう)(がた)を、cforms.cha()(のう)(かつ)(よう)(けい)()(じゅつ)する(ひつ)(よう)がある。
      Katsuyō no aru hinshi de wa, ctypes.cha ni kanō na katsuyōgata o, cforms.cha ni kanō na katsuyōkei o kijutsu suru hitsuyō ga aru.
      For inflecting parts of speech, it is necessary to describe the potential inflectional types in ctypes.cha and the potential inflected forms in cforms.cha.
