From Old High German legar, from Proto-Germanic *legrą. Cognate with Danish lejr, Norwegian Bokmål leir, Gothic 𐌻𐌹𐌲𐍂𐍃 (ligrs), English lair, Swedish läger (place to sleep/camp) and lager (storage/stock).
