From Proto-Indo-European *h₂leytos (abhorrence, loath), from *h₂leyt- (to do something hateful, abhorrent). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *lissus (abhorrence) (compare Irish lius, liuss (loathing, disgust)), Ancient Greek ἀλιτρός (alitrós, sinful, wicked).
