German edit

Etymology edit

From Middle High German ūfsnīden, equivalent to auf- +‎ schneiden. Compare Dutch opsnijden, German Low German upsnieden. The sense “to brag” apparently figuratively from “to cut food for serving” (so as to show one’s opulence).
