Inherited from Middle High German barmherze(c), from Old High German armherz, a calque of Latin misericors. By surface analysis, barmen +‎ Herz +‎ -ig (for the first element see Erbarmen). Cognate with Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍄𐍃 (armahairts), Old English earmheort.
