Etymology edit

From Old Galician-Portuguese emprender, from Vulgar Latin *imprehendere, from Latin prehendere.

The current form came from the older emprehender, modified in a learned manner from the popularly inherited, now obsolete, form emprender to more closely reflect the Latin etymon, as with compreender and comprender, repreender and reprender, etc.
