Etymology

Originally heil froh (literally very glad, totally glad) (compare Dutch heel blij). This use of heil is not generally part of standard German, but is normal in German Low German and some dialects of Central German.

  1. deeply glad (often implying relief)
    Ich bin heilfroh, dass ihr nichts passiert ist.
    “I’m just so glad that nothing has happened to her.”
  2. (casual use) satisfied; glad
    Ich bin heilfroh, dass ich morgen nicht zur Arbeit muss.
    “I’m glad I don’t need to go to work tomorrow.”
