ontmoeten
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
From Middle Dutch ontmoeten, untmuten, entmuten, from ont- + moeten. The latter verb is from Old Dutch *muoten, from Proto-West Germanic *mōtijan, from Proto-Germanic *mōtijaną (“to meet”) and is unrelated to modern Dutch moeten (“to have to, must”).
The unprefixed form is cognate to Low German möten, West Frisian moetsje, English meet, Danish møde.
