Verbs where the ablaut vowel was followed by -y- in Proto-Indo-European.[edit]
The first class is the largest and most regular class of Dutch strong verbs. The paradigm is:

/ɛɪ/ - /eː/ - /eː/ - /eː/, for example kijken - keek - keken - gekeken

The diphthong /ɛɪ/ is written with ij and there are but few verbs with an ij in the stem that are weak. On the other hand, verbs with ei are, as a rule, weak.
