From Sanskrit चन्द्र (candra, shining; the shining one (referring to the moon)). Cognate with Old Khmer candra, can, °cann; Modern Khmer ចន្ទ្រ (cɑntrɔɔ), Lao ຈັນ (chan), ᦶᦈᧃ (ṫsaen), Shan ၸၼ်ႇတႃႇ (tsàn tàa). Compare Pali canda, from which Thai จันท์ is derived.
