From ชื่อ (chʉ̂ʉ, name) +‎ สกุล (sà-gun, family); calque of English family name; probably first used on 22 March 2455 BE (1913 CE), when the Law on Designation of Family Names, 2456 Buddhist Era (พระราชบัญญัติขนานนามสกุล พระพุทธศักราช ๒๔๕๖) was promulgated.
