From Proto-Tai *ɗajᶜ (“to obtain”). Cognate with Lao ໄດ້ (dai), Lü ᦺᦡᧉ (ḋay2), Shan လႆႈ (lāy), Tai Dam ꪼꪒ꫁, Zhuang ndaej. Compare Sui qdyais (“to get, to obtain”), Southern Kam lis (“to get”), Proto-Hlai *ɗɯː (“to get”).
