From Sanskrit मुक्ताहार (muktāhāra, literally “garland of pearls”), from मुक्ता (muktā, “pear”) + हार (hāra, “garland”); equivalent to Thai มุกดา (múk-daa) + หาร (hǎan).

The name was given to the city in 2313 BE (1770/71 CE), after a magical pearl the city founder dreamt of.[1] For the literal meaning, see #Etymology 1.
