EtymologyEdit
A hybrid of the Devanagari letter र (“ra”) (the first consonant in रुपया (rupyā, “rupee”)) and the Latin letter R, overstruck with an additional line similar to other currency symbols such as ¥ (“yen”), ₱ (“peso”) etc. It was created by Indian designer Udaya Kumar and introduced by the Indian government in 2010.
