EtymologyEdit

A hybrid of the Devanagari letter (ra) (the first consonant in रुपया (rupyā, rupee)) and the Latin letter R, overstruck with an additional line similar to other currency symbols such as ¥ (yen), (peso) etc. It was created by Indian designer Udaya Kumar and introduced by the Indian government in 2010.
