Plural of Chiapa: a term commonly featured in the names of many historical Spanish settlements in the region, borrowed from Classical Nahuatl Chiapan, from chia (chia) +‎ -pan (place of; place of the); alternatively, from chia +‎ -apan (river, stream), presumably in reference to the Grijalva River.
