From Middle High German diuten, from Old High German diuten, from Proto-West Germanic *þiudijan whence also comes Old English þēod (people, nation).

Cognate with Yiddish טײַטשן (taytshn), Dutch duiden, Icelandic þýða (translate), Swedish tyda, Danish tyde.
