editFrom Middle High German hecheln, from Old High German *hīgōn, Proto-West Germanic *hīgōn (“to breathe, snort”).
Cognate with Dutch hijgen (“to pant”), English hie (“to hurry, hasten”), Danish hige (“to aspire, long”), Latin cieō (“set in motion, invoke, provoke”), Ancient Greek κινέω (kinéō, “move, set in motion”).
