Etymology 1

edit

Probably from Low German killern, apparently iterative of *killen, kiddeln, from Middle Low German kittelen, kētelen, from Old Saxon kitilōn, from Proto-Germanic *kitilōną.

For the phonetic development compare especially Danish kilde, kildre, Norwegian kile. Also cognate with German kitzeln, Dutch kietelen, English kittle.
