From an older adjective lass, laß (languid, slothful, idle, weary), from Old High German laz (slow, sluggish), from Proto-Germanic *lataz (slow, weary), from Proto-Indo-European *lad- (slow, weary). Akin to Old English læt (slow, slack, lax, late) (English late), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐍄𐍃 (lats, sluggish, weary), Latin lassus (tired). More at late.
