Etymology 1

edit

Derived from Middle High German pūken (to beat, brawl), probably ultimately related to Pauker (teacher), compare also German Pauke (kettledrum).

Verb

edit

pauken (weak, third-person singular present paukt, past tense paukte, past participle gepaukt, auxiliary haben)

  1. (colloquial, school slang) to swot, cram (study with effort)
    Synonym: büffeln
  2. (university slang, dated) to practice academic fencing
  3. (dated) to brawl

Etymology 2

edit

From Pauke (kettledrum, timpani). Compare to dated pauken (to brawl), relation to German pochen (to thump, throb) has been suggested.

Verb

edit

pauken (weak, third-person singular present paukt, past tense paukte, past participle gepaukt, auxiliary haben)

  1. (intransitive) to beat a drum
    • 1817, Clemens Brentano, “Baciochis Erzählung vom wilden Jäger”, in Die mehreren Wehmüller und ungarischen Nationalgesichter[1]:
Das Schauspiel war so grandios angelegt, daß man diesen ganzen kunstlosen Scheunenbrand für seinen Triumph hielt, man klatschte und paukte und trompetete; schnell ließ ich alle meine übrigen Stücke in die Lücken stellen und von neuem losfigurieren.
(please add an English translation of this quotation)
  2. to drum in; to emphasize [with auf]
