From Pali dāna (“alms; donation; gift”) or Sanskrit दान (dāna, “idem”); perhaps via Old Khmer dāna, dān (“idem”); extended as Sanskrit प्रदान (pradāna), Old Khmer pradāna, from which Thai ประทาน (bprà-taan) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ទាន (tiən); Lao ທານ (thān).
