From Pali dāna (alms; donation; gift) or Sanskrit दान (dāna, idem); perhaps via Old Khmer dāna, dān (idem); extended as Sanskrit प्रदान (pradāna), Old Khmer pradāna, from which Thai ประทาน (bprà-taan) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ទាន (tiən); Lao ທານ (thān).
