From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *gan ~ *k(y)at (to run, dance, kick) (STEDT). Cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (gān, to leap, bound, gallop, canter). The Tibeto-Burman root is distinct from, though possibly related to, Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gaːr ~ *ga (to dance; to sing; to leap; to stride), whence Old Chinese (OC *kaːl, “to sing, chant”).

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (kɑn² "lake"), and apparently not mentioned by Luce 1981. Resembles Old Chinese (OC *qroːn, “bay, gulf”), though the Chinese seems to have an internal derivation that makes connection with Burmese less likely + a medial r.”
