Originally 瀕, ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : a person 頁 near the water's edge 涉, extended to mean "on the verge". The water component 氵 was removed to distinguish its usage for "frequent".
Etymology 1
editPerhaps from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *phi-r/n/s (“late, behind, after, outside”) (STEDT root #5883). See 比 (OC *piʔ, *pis, *bi, *bis, *biɡ, “to compare, match, follow”) for more cognates.
