Originally the iterative form of an older verb meaning “to prickle,” probably *ast, *est (on the model of vadīt, vest), from *ed-ti, *ad-ti, from Proto-Baltic *ad-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁edʰ-, *h₁odʰ- (pointed, sharp).[1]
