From Middle High German füegen, fuogen, from Old High German fuogen, from Proto-West Germanic *fōgijan, from Proto-Germanic *fōgijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ḱ- (to join, attach).

Cognate with Dutch voegen and dated English fay, which is related to English fair. Also distantly related to English peace and pact through Latin.
