From Middle Persian [script needed] (kʾl /⁠kār⁠/, work, deed, affair). Ultimately a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *kʷer- (to do, make, construct). Related to کردن(kardan), پیکر(peykar), etc. Cognates include Sanskrit -कार (-kāra) and Armenian կար- (kar-) (to be able to).
