Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese castanho (“brown”), probably from Latin castaneus (“pertaining to chestnuts”).

Cognate with Galician castaño, Mirandese castanho, Asturian castañu, Spanish castaño and Catalan castany. Doublet of castâneo.
