Variant of dialectal ap, from Proto-Albanian *apa, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁epye/o-, from *h₁ep- ‎(to take). Compare Latin apīscor ‎(I grasp), Ancient Greek ἅπτω ‎(háptō, fasten, bind), Old Armenian ունիմ ‎(unim, possess). The verb is suppletive with past dhashë and participle dhënë from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-.
