From Middle Iranian *tāk (arch); compare Middle Persian [script needed] (tʾg /⁠tāg⁠/, arch). Ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *teg- (to cover; roof), and akin to Latin toga (garment) and Ancient Greek στέγος (stégos, roof).
