From Middle Chinese (MC dengH, “stable”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨴ᩠ᨿ᩵ᨦ, Khün ᨴ᩠ᨿ᩵ᨦ, Lao ທ່ຽງ (thīang), ᦵᦑᧂᧈ (teng¹), Shan တဵင်ႈ (tāeng), Ahom 𑜄𑜢𑜂𑜫 (tiṅ), Nong Zhuang dingh or dingq, Saek เถี้ยง.
