editStay away otherwise you will fall in love with me.
- Éloignez-vous de moi, sinon vous allez tomber amoureux. (if you’re speaking to a man)
- Éloignez-vous de moi, sinon vous allez tomber amoureuse. (if you’re speaking to a woman) —Stephen (Talk) 22:51, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- In French there is a distinction between man and woman, but also a T-V distinction (tu/vous) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%E2%80%93V_distinction#French_2). For example, if the persons are friends we can translate this way: Éloigne-toi de moi, sinon tu vas tomber amour/eux/euse. [Moreover, I assume there is only one addressee]. --AldoSyrt (talk) 06:16, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- Here's two more, with a slightly different tone (and assuming tu, and female interlocutor):
- Gardes ta distance, autrement tu risques de tomber amoureuse de moi.
- Restes à l'écart de moi, autrement tu risques de tomber amoureuse.
- Mathglot (talk) 06:04, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- The usual phrase is Garde tes distances. [note: Garde and Reste in Reste à l'écart whithout final "s"] -- AldoSyrt (talk) 15:32, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

- Je vais te parler de ma vie (to one person: informal). --AldoSyrt (talk) 16:53, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
- Je vais te/vous racconter ma vie. (not better than above, just different; has more the sense of "telling the story of my life" than telling about my life, admittedly, not a huge distinction.) --Mathglot (talk) 03:38, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
- Je vais te/vous raconter ma vie. [one "c" in "raconter"] -- AldoSyrt (talk) 12:08, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

editI am not afraid, for God is with me. I was born for this
- Je n’ai pas peur, car mon Dieu est à moi. Je suis né pour cela. (if you’re a male)
- Je n’ai pas peur, car mon Dieu est à moi. Je suis née pour cela. (if you’re a female) —Stephen (Talk) 04:05, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
- The phrase "mon Dieu est à moi" is not very common in French. Seems to be a translation from Spanish of a prayer by John of the Cross. I would say:
- Je n'ai pas peur, car Dieu est avec moi. Je suis né pour cela. (if you are a male, in a polished style [written])
- Je n'ai pas peur, car Dieu est avec moi. Je suis né pour ça. (if you are a male, colloquial, usual style)
- Je n'ai pas peur, car Dieu est avec moi. Je suis née pour cela. (if you are a female, in a polished style [written]).
- Je n'ai pas peur, car Dieu est avec moi. Je suis née pour ça. (if you are a female, colloquial, usual style). --AldoSyrt (talk) 06:26, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

- Look here. --Æ&Œ (talk) 23:00, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- It might have been better transcribed as "citater fra[...", as it's a fragment. It's more likely, I think, that it's Latin, and when you give Google Translate a kick and tell it to assume Latin, it comes back as "cited fra[...". I can't figure out how that grammar works, though, nor what fra[... is meant to start. Unless, of course, Einstein was in the habit of using random snippets of Danish in his notes. --Catsidhe (verba, facta) 01:39, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

editHi, I would like to translate the sentence "Your faith healed you" to Aramaic.
I think it's spoused to be "הימנותך אסאי לך", but I'm not sure about the inflection of the verb.

- I think the Peshitta says: ܗܰܝܡܳܢܽܘܬ݂ܶܟ݂ܝ ܐܰܚܝܰܬ݂ܶܟ݂ܝ ܘܶܐܬ݂ܰܐܣܝܰܬ݂ (or: הַימָנוּתֵכי אַחיַתֵכי וֵאתַאסיַת) —Stephen (Talk) 10:59, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. ShoobyD (talk) 03:02, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
- BTW, "הַימָנוּתֵכי אַחיַתֵכי" is the feminine form; to a male you say "הימנותך אחיתך" (which literally means "your faith gives you life"). ShoobyD (talk) 04:04, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

- Just out of curiosity, why did you choose the word "gob" as opposed to "mouth?" WikiWinters (talk) 22:09, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- I would also suggest "trap" as well as "gob." —JohnC5 (Talk | contribs) 03:20, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- We shouldn't be picky about word choices a translator makes. "Halt's Maul" (=halt das Maul) or "halt die Fresse" is just a usual way to say "shut up" in German, literal translations doesn't matter. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 08:01, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Fundamentals to French
editI wanted to tell someone they had good fundamentals (good basic skills) in French but can't think of a good word. Also we lack such a sense of fundamentals, basics also lacks this sense (good basic, good fundamentals) and they're not really singular nouns (you can't tell someone they have one good fundamental but the rest are bad). Renard Migrant (talk) 13:08, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- I’m just trying to imagine what your sentence would look like in English, but I’m having trouble with it. It does not sound correct (to my ear) that you would say "you have good fundamentals in French." How about « notions de base », « base solide », « principes fondamentaux », « principes de base », or « une bonne connaissance des bases » —Stephen (Talk) 15:50, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- I've probably picked it up from watching Major League Baseball. I think « principes de base », « bases solides » are really good choices. Renard Migrant (talk) 20:57, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

edit(The church finance committee is proud we're under budget. If we had a motto, this would be it.) Thanks in advance. RJFJR (talk) 01:15, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
- You could do "dēparcī (sumus) et superbīmus igitur," which would mean "(We are) miserly/stingy and proud therefore." Translating "cheap" in the sense of "stingy" but not "greedy" is a bit hard. —JohnC5 (Talk | contribs) 02:05 30 September 2014 (UTC)
