From Old Galician-Portuguese afumar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *affūmāre, ultimately from Latin fūmus (smoke, noun). By surface analysis, a- +‎ fumo +‎ -ar. Compare Portuguese and Asturian afumar, Spanish ahumar.
