Etymology edit

dafür- +‎ stehen

Verb edit

dafürstehen (irregular strong, third-person singular present steht dafür, past tense stand dafür, past participle dafürgestanden, past subjunctive stände dafür or stünde dafür, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. (Austria, otherwise dated) to vouch (for something)
  2. (Austria) to be worth it, worthwhile

Usage notes edit

In northern and central Germany, to the extent that this verb is still in use, only the auxiliary haben is used. In southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, sein is common in the vernacular and also, alternatively, in standard usage.
