editNoun
editmaya (n class, plural maya)
Tagalog
editEtymology 1
editFrom Proto-Philippine *máya (“rice bird, small bird found in rice fields”). Alternatively, from Sanskrit माया (māyā, “illusion”), according to Pardo de Tavera (1887).
Pronunciation
edit- (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /ˈmaja/ [ˈmaː.jɐ]
- Rhymes: -aja
- Syllabification: ma‧ya
Noun
editmaya (Baybayin spelling ᜋᜌ)
Etymology 2
editThe original term has become obsolete. However recent usage is due to clipping of mamaya.
Pardo de Tavera (1887) posits it to come from Sanskrit समय (samaya, “appointed or proper time, right moment for doing anything, opportunity, occasion, time, season”) with the first syllable mistaken as the sa- prefix, hence later elided. Compare Javanese ꦱꦼꦩꦪ (semaya, “to postpone; to delay”), Old Javanese samaya, Indonesian semaya. See also samaya.
Pronunciation
edit- (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /maˈjaʔ/ [mɐˈjaʔ]
- Rhymes: -aʔ
- Syllabification: ma‧ya
Adverb
editmayâ (Baybayin spelling ᜋᜌ)
Usage notes
edit- Used mostly in derived terms.
