Etymology edit
From Middle High German schuldec, from Old High German sculdig. Equivalent to Schuld + -ig. The form shows (chiefly southern) blocking of umlaut in -ul- + consonant, as usually in modern German (exceptions gülden, gültig, Sülze). Cognate with Luxembourgish schëlleg, Dutch schuldig.
