Etymology

edit

Cognate with Erzya ор (or). Compare оршамс (oršams, to put on (an item of clothing)) [the shorter щамс (ščams) is more common in this sense], SKES and UEW link Erzya oršta-, orča- and Moksha šča-, uršta- with dialectal Finnish verha (a curtain; dress) (from which Finnish verho (curtain)) and possibly Estonian võru (circle; wreath).[1] EES, however, links võru with Finnish varho (trace left by a wheel), it does not list Mordvinic cognates.[2]
